Plan an IoT pilot around an operational question

Define the decision you want to improve before choosing devices, dashboards or alerts.

Choose the question first

What should your team know that it cannot reliably know today? That may be the condition of an asset, where a vehicle has travelled, or whether an environment needs attention.

Identify who will act on the information. A useful pilot connects observation to a decision.

Describe the deployment environment

Record where equipment will operate, how it will be powered, what connectivity is available and who can access it for maintenance. Include the practical conditions the device will face.

For vehicle projects, discuss compatibility, installation and the signals required before assuming that the same device can serve every vehicle.

Keep the first trial bounded

Choose a manageable set of devices and a clear review period. Agree what will be observed, how missing or questionable readings will be handled, and who will review the information.

Set criteria for deciding whether to continue, change the approach or stop. Avoid treating a working demonstration as proof of readiness for every operating environment.

Plan beyond the device

Include ownership, access, support and data handling in the pilot plan. Hardware, connectivity, software and the people operating the system all need attention.
